This property is situated in the culturally vibrant area of De Waterkant, which clings to the slopes of Signal Hill in Cape Town. Steeped in history, the area still has a large number of original homes dating back to the early 19th century.
The owner’s brief was to preserve the unique character of the home while bringing light into the interior spaces, especially to the kitchen area located in the basement of the house. The architect created a double volume in the dining area, producing an amazing sense of height in an otherwise compact space.

Using the bulthaup b1 range, my design made the kitchen island the focal point – the area where the cooking and entertaining would happen. The back wall houses the storage units, the fridges and the ovens. In the corner there is a breakfast area which also accommodates the small appliances. The sink area is facing the triple volume court yard, benefiting from the abundance of natural light.

The resultant skilful use of space and light makes this small townhouse a delight in which to live and entertain friends while enjoying the spectacular views of the ocean.
